What a plant label cannot remember.
Keep a growing notebook that stays useful next year.

Record the decision
A label tells you what was planted; a notebook can explain why. Write down the location, date, and the reason you chose it. Include the packet or supplier guidance you followed. Keep the entry short enough that you will actually make another one when the next task arrives.
Describe what happened
Note emergence, a change in weather, or the first harvest in ordinary language. Separate an observation from a theory about its cause. If one area performs differently, describe the difference before reaching for a remedy. A photograph taken from the same position can help you compare growth without relying entirely on memory.
Leave a note for your future self
At the end of a season, write three useful details: something to repeat, something to simplify, and a question still unanswered. Keep the original entries rather than rewriting them into a perfect story. An honest record of a small experiment is more valuable than a calendar that pretends everything went to plan.
