Read the bank before the water.

A good session starts with the ground beneath your feet.

An angler beside quiet water

Begin with access

Before unpacking, check that fishing is permitted and that the position is suitable for your experience. Notice the route back, the stability of the bank, and the room behind you. An attractive patch of water is only useful if you can reach it, cast comfortably, and leave without difficulty.

Plan the whole session

Think about where the tackle bag will sit and how you would land a fish. Keep the path clear for other people. Look for overhead lines, branches, and nearby activity before setting up; a shorter, controlled cast is a better starting point than distance for its own sake.

Let observation come next

Once the position makes sense, spend a few minutes watching the surface. Compare one patch with another rather than deciding that every ripple is a fish. Write down what you actually noticed, including conditions and timing. A quiet session can still teach you something useful about a familiar place.
